STATEMENT FROM THE HOPKINTON BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION

Oct. 23, 2020

At this point it seems unlikely that we will be able to have anything remotely close to a regular season of travel basketball in 2020-21. This is due to a number of factors, including the Hopkinton schools not making the gyms available for outside activities, the state not yet allowing games, and indications that there will continue to be a rise in COVID cases in the coming weeks and months as we head into flu season. However, things can change quickly, and we have not ruled out attempting to move forward with entering teams in the Metrowest League, which has tentative plans to start a modified season in January. We will close HBA registration on Nov. 1, so if you have any interest, make sure to register by then (there is no cost to register).

The plan for the Hopkinton Parks & Rec in-town basketball program is to have weekly practices/scrimmages but no formal games. All practices will be at Center School, which does remain open (for those who are not aware, it is no longer an active school). Information about that program is available here as well as at the Parks & Rec website. Parks & Rec takes precedence because it is a town-sponsored program and because it can be limited to only Hopkinton residents — no involvement with other towns — making it substantially safer.

At the most recent HBA board meeting we discussed the possibility of offering clinics/scrimmages for travel players who are looking for a higher level of competition. We will continue to explore those options, but until we know how many players have signed up for rec basketball we won’t know how much gym time (if any) might be available. We expect to have that information in mid-November.

Lastly, Tri-Valley Sports has opened the HBA online store for anyone who would like to purchase HBA apparel before the holiday season. The link is: https://trivalley.tuosystems.com/stores/hopkintonythbball2020
